It was hard work to face these uncomfortable feelings. I had to use my mind, my brain and my body to chip away at this stuckness, which was rooted in my response to medical trauma. And the first step was understanding that the things I was feeling in my body were not directly related to a medical condition in my throat.
Trauma is not the thing that happens to us; rather, it is the reaction of our brain/body/nervous system to that adverse experience. Walking my dogs in nature is one activity I use to regulate my nervous system and bring me back to calm.
Wallowing happens when we attach judgement to an emotion. This often looks like negative self-talk and can spiral out of control and take over our day, mood and overall outlook.
I personally started this practice when I developed panic attacks after my cancer treatments. It helped immensely, because once I was able to support myself and allow the emotions to come up, I found they would pass through me.
